Check the Status of Your EDD’s Pregnancy Disability Leave Application

Today, let’s check the status of your pregnancy State Disability Insurance (SDI) application. I will show you what happens after the initial application, how to check your messages from EDD, how to make sure your claim is good, and what to expect when receiving your maternity leave benefits.

At this point, you would have already submitted the initial pregnancy State Disability Insurance (SDI) leave application with EDD. Your doctor would also have submitted their Physician Certificate to certify your pregnancy. If you haven’t done these two things, check out my post on how to apply for your pregnancy SDI leave with EDD in California.

Once EDD receives both your application and the Physician Certificate, they will send you a message that it will take around 2 weeks to process your application. You can find EDD messages in the Message Center Inbox on EDD website.

How to Check Your EDD Messages

  1. Go to EDD home page and select myEDD.

  1. Log In. Then, select SDI Online.

  1. On the SDI Home page, you will see the Message Center notification and how many new messages you have. Select Inbox to view your messages.
  1. You will see a list of messages. Select a message to read it. Note: Make sure to ALWAYS check your messages and complete necessary forms to not lose your benefits.
    • DE 429D Notice of Computation – This will show the calculation for your benefit amount or the money you will receive during your leave. This is calculated from your wages.
    • Electronic Benefit Payment (DE 2500E) – This shows the date range and the actual benefit amount you received. Usually, it’s for the last 14 days since EDD will pay you every 2 weeks.
    • Additional Benefits for New Mothers – This has the link to the EDD Paid Family Leave website where you can apply for bonding leave benefits after your pregnancy SDI leave is over.

How to View EDD Claim Information

  1. On the SDI Home page, you can select the Status link next to your Claim ID to view details of your claim.
  1. On the Claim Summary page, you can see your claim information such as your name, Claim ID, Return-to-Work Date, Benefit Amounts, how much you get paid Daily, Weekly, etc. Below is an example of what you may see. (I made up some numbers and got lazy at the last few calculations…)

How to View EDD Claim Forms

  1. On the Claim Summary page, scroll down to the Forms section.
    • Select visit available forms to view additional forms you can submit for your claim.
    • Select view form history to view forms you already submitted.
    • Select your doctor’s name to view forms that your doctors submitted.

What SDI Benefit Payments Look Like

For the first week of SDI leave, you won’t get paid by EDD. You may get paid from your employer by using your time-off days or your employer may cover this gap period for you. I’ve worked for companies that did both approaches. Check your company policies or talk to HR to see which one applies to you.

After the first unpaid week, if you chose Direct Deposit in the initial application, EDD will pay you every 2 weeks and send money straight to your bank account. If you chose Debit Card or Mailed Checks, you will receive money through those methods instead.

Next Step – Extend Your SDI Leave or Request Paid Family Leave (PFL)

You will receive your maternity leave SDI benefits from EDD until your disability leave ends.

If you experience medical complications with your delivery or with your baby, you can request to extend your SDI leave. Note that you must request the extension BEFORE your SDI leave ends. Once you start your Paid Family Leave with EDD, you cannot extend your SDI leave anymore.

If everything went smoothly, once your SDI leave ends, you can start Paid Family Leave (PFL) with EDD. PFL is also called bonding leave. This is your time to bond with your baby.
